
Betty J. Holmes, 92, of Vancouver, WA, passed away in her home on March 9, 2014. She was born March 16, 1921 in Portland, OR to Charles F. and Adelia "Ada" Nelson. At a young age, Betty moved with her family to Vancouver where she attended the Central and Franklin Grade Schools, Shumway Jr. High, and graduated from Vancouver High School in 1939.
In 1942, Betty married another Vancouver native, Ward H. Holmes. She worked at the Army Finance Office during World War II and spent many years as a medical secretary. In later years, she was the Office Manager for Smith-Reynolds Post 14, American Legion, retiring in 1984.
In 1957, Ward and Betty built a home on the Evergreen Highway where they resided for over 50 years.
Betty is survived by four nieces, Janet Elliott, Nancy Holmes, Susan Costanzo and Judy Westwood; two nephews, Morgan "Joe" Mercer and Mike Mercer; and her "Guardian Angels", Matt and Tara Haldeman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William "Bill" Nelson, who died in WW II; and Ward, her husband of 69 years.
In keeping with Betty's wishes there will be no public memorial service. She will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Ward at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
