

William (“Sam”) Samuel Clauss, Sr., 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 16, 2025, in Venice, Florida. A long-time resident of Venice, Sam was born on January 16, 1945, in Glen Burnie, Maryland, where he was raised and began building the foundation of a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and quiet generosity.
Sam is survived by his former spouse, Joyce A. Clauss of Catonsville, Maryland, and their children: William S. Clauss, Jr. (Douglas Blake) of Catonsville, Maryland; Concetta “Connie” M. Kuentzel (Edward “Chip”) of Venice, Florida; and Jay J. Clauss (James Della Penna) of St. Augustine, Florida, and was predeceased by his long-time partner, Rose Clark and survived by her daughter Jessica Grzywacz of Chicago, Illinois. He was also a proud grandfather to Bradley Kuentzel (Caitlin), Samantha (Gene) Prater, Christian “Trevor” Clauss, Chase Kuentzel, Mia Clauss, and Andrew Kuentzel; and a loving great-grandfather to Cayden Prater, Ayva Prater, Clark Kuentzel, Roman Gonzalez, Samir Gutierrez, Luca Gonzalez, and Ayla Abbot, and had many nieces and nephews, and some very close and life-long friends.
Sam was predeceased by his parents, William O. Clauss and Leah M. Royer Clauss, as well as his siblings Patricia Dennis, Barbara Curtis, Brenda “Sue” Clauss, and Charlie Clauss. He is survived by his siblings Martha O’Herlihy, Walter “Tommy” Clauss, and his step-sister, Bonnie Hulson.
A natural entrepreneur with an unwavering work ethic, Sam built a successful career in excavating as the owner of W.S. Clauss & Sons and later became a founding member of Classic Building Specialties. He also invested in real estate and various business ventures throughout his life. Early in his career, he worked for United Airlines while growing his excavating business—an early example of the determination that defined him.
Sam proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, where he was both a paratrooper and a military police officer. His service remained an important part of his identity throughout his life.
After selling his business, Sam relocated permanently to Venice, Florida, where he enjoyed the community and camaraderie at Capri Isles Golf Club. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, steady resilience, and the deep love he held for his family.
Sam’s presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
