Born December 7, 1929 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, Berry was a graduate of Oklahoma University. He served two years in the army and was deployed to Korea. Just before deployment, he met Marlene Walters on a blind date. Upon his return, the two were married on April 18, 1954. His love for his country and Marlene never wavered.
As a graduate of OU, Berry was hired by Skelly Oil. After a year in Kermit, Texas, Berry and Marlene returned and, from that point on became self-employed. His career began with a small gas station on the corner of Pierpont and Seaward. To introduce himself, he gave away 5lb. bags of sugar, inviting the neighbors to his new business. For 22 years, Berry ran his station with a kind heart and gave to all in need.
While living on Pierpont, their two children were born. Marta and her husband, Mark Shamblin have two children, Jenny Mandle (Jason) and Jordan Lindebaum. Guy and his wife, Tracy, have two sons, Tyler and Colin.
Berry and Marlene began a new business in 1977. He said people were much happier buying wine than spending their money on gas. For 10 years they owned the Plaza Wine and Spirits in Oxnard. Their third venture, selling real estate, lasted 22 years.
Berry was an active volunteer with Community Memorial Hospital, a member of Grace Lutheran Church, and past president of the Marina Mobile Home Park Homeowner’s Association. It was there that he enjoyed playing bridge and took his daily 3-mile walk through the harbor. Dad never met a stranger and was a friend to all.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Livingston Memorial Hospice or Lutheran World Relief. We are thankful for so many. First, we thank our thoughtful neighbors, Pastor Bob and Bev Irish. Our appreciation also goes out to Dan Kaplan and the Hospice staff, and to the caring staff at the Californian (Ventura Convalescent Home).
A private service will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010, 1:00 P.M. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Ben Yaspelkis and Pastor Bob Irish.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura. Condolences may be left at www.TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
