

He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Grinnell College in Iowa. He served for three years in the United States Navy which brought him to California.
He graduated from Stanford Law School and joined the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office in 1961, then went into private practice.
Ed was a lawyer, socialist, civil libertarian, and a member of the Peace Corps at various points in his life.
He had two daughters from his first marriage to Mary Laing Pease, Karen Kathleen Laing and Barbara Christine Laing, and two grandchildren, Maryemma Sikes Warfield and William Henry Sikes. His second wife, Margaret Stuart Dunlap, preceded him in death in 1992.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, David B. Laing
