John L. Smith, of Ventura, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 16, 2018. John was born on July 18, 1945, in Exeter, CA. He lived in Tulare, CA, until the age of nine when his father moved the family to Ventura on his birthday. John attended Will Rogers Elementary, Cabrillo Jr. High and graduated from Ventura High in 1963. He was on the Field and Track team and Varsity Football team in his Jr. and Sr. years. John played the trumpet, trombone and French Horns in the Orchestra and Band for 6years each. He later moved to Washington state with his family, then returned to Ventura for the last 30 years. John was a Land Surveyor with the State of California, Dept. of Cal-Trans and in the state of Washington. He was very involved with the North American Paint Horse Association and he loved riding his favorite horse “Jr. “
He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine, of 26 years; son, Christopher (wife-Beth) and granddaughters, Emily & Allison of Vancouver, WA; daughter, Yvonne Smith of Seattle, WA; sister, Anna Lawing (husband, Dwight), of Farmington, NM; sister, Judy Butler, of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; brother, Steven (wife-Pat) of Mountain Home, ID; brother, Bruce (wife-Teri) of Clovis, CA; Hugh Scott’s wife, Alicia of Ventura, CA. Nephews; Michael Carpenter, Jeremy Patelzick, Shawn Smith, and Matthew Smith. Nieces; Michele Smith, Brianna Smith, Kerri Bacon and Karlye Smith.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John (1999) and Leota (2001) Smith; sister, Linda (1943) and brother, Hugh Scott Smith (Dec. 2017).
There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial service to be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018, 2:00 p.m., at Lake Casitas, Section H (Gazebo). There will be shuttle service provided by Lorraine’s cousins from the main parking lot OR for a $20 entrance fee you can park inside.
