Joseph Charles Sachs, 73, peacefully went into the arms of Jesus on October 26, 2012, with his loving family at his side, following a lengthy battle with dementia. Joe was born in Los Angeles on November 16, 1938, to Joseph Mucio Sachs and Celia Ronquillo Sachs. He had a large extended family who affectionately called him "Bop" as a child, a nickname that derived from one of Snow White's dwarves. Joe was raised in government housing in East LA and graduated from Wilson High School in 1956. Joe was an extremely hard worker who set his goals high. In addition to serving in the Air Force Reserves and working full time, Joe was also a student of University of Southern California, from which he would graduate in 1966.
Joe met his future wife, Carolyn, while they were both visiting Van Nuys Baptist Church, and the two were married on August 12, 1967. Joe had many interests and was a life-long student, attending both Talbot Theological Seminary and law school in the 1960's. After accepting a position at Heubline Foods in 1978, Joe and Carolyn moved to Ventura where he would reside for 33 years. Joe was employed in human resource management throughout his career until he retired in 2006. However, Joe's avocation was theology. He was best known to many as "Mr. Joe" and called his Sunday school students theologians and scholars. He had a profound influence on many young people.
Joe was a devoted family man. One of his favorite places to be was in the audience of a performance by one of his children, or watching a USC game with his family by his side. He loved conversation and enjoyed a good debate. The greatest irony of life was when he was silenced by his illness when there was so much left that we wanted to hear. Joe is survived by his wife Carolyn; their children, son and daughter-in-law Jon and Amy Sachs, son Eric Sachs, and daughter and son-in-law Susan and David Nettles; brother John Sachs, and sister Mariella Sachs; sister-in-law Alma Sachs, and brother- and sister-in-law Warren and Mary Jane Wright. Joe will be greatly missed by his five grandchildren, Corrie, Mason, Cassidy, Campbell, and Londyn, in addition to many nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Mucio and Celia Ronquillo Sachs, and his brother Raul Sachs. A grateful thanks to both Oxnard Manor Healthcare Center and Vitas Hospice for their loving care during the last stages of his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The UCSF Memory and Aging Center, PO Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145-0339, or online at makeagift.ucsf.edu/brain.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held on November 17, 2012, 2:00 PM at Community Presbyterian Church, 1555 Poli Street, Ventura.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura. Condolences may be left at TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
