Martha Jane Glover, age 82, passed away May 2, 2011, in her Ventura home with her husband of 58 years at her side after an extended illness. Up to just her last days, Jane enjoyed the ocean and island views from her home and the antics of the birds in the patio.
Jane’s parents, Rae and Cona McKinster, moved in 1926 from their Kansas farm to Phoenix for Rae’s health. Jane was born there June 19, 1928. Her father died shortly after Jane’s birth and Cona moved back to Kansas with her children, Jane and son Reba Gene (Mac). There, Cona married a newspaper publisher. The newspaper was sold at the onset of World War II and the family, which now included Jane’s baby brother, Thomas Wadham, returned to Phoenix. Education and chores were the family priorities.
After completing one year of junior college in Phoenix, Jane’s beloved aunt and uncle in Kansas invited her to live with them and become a teacher. The one-room school where she taught did not have indoor plumbing or electricity, heating was by a wood stove, transportation over seven miles of unimproved roads was a Model A. Two years was enough, she enrolled in Arizona State University and graduated with a degree in Education in 1951. She was the first woman of her many aunts and cousins to graduate from college.
While visiting in San Diego, Jane was invited to a beach party where she met a Navy Engineering Officer, Robert Glover. Their common Kansas roots were a bond. They were married December 21, 1952 and raised three children, Denise, (now deceased), Raeleen and Kint.
Education was ongoing for Jane personally, academically and spiritually. In addition to the one-room school experience, she taught in Bakersfield, Santa Paula and Fillmore, sometimes for the money, sometimes for the challenge. Her focus was early childhood development.
The Church of Religious science held deep ties to Jane. She was a Practitioner for twenty years with tireless dedication and with the same lively spirit she used to raise her family.
After the children were grown and on their own, Jane enjoyed world travel and the arts. Highlights were a New York Opera tour, European art tour, birding trips, a western art collection and a car trip through England with her daughter Denise. A second home in Fort Collins, Colorado, was a special delight. It was just across an open field from son Kint and granddaughter Mollie and a gathering point for friends and relatives.
Jane had a full and active life and leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration. She is survived by her husband, Robert; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Sandra Wadham; daughter and son-in-law, Raeleen and Matthew Dunn; son, Kint Glover; and Denise’s partner, Lea Ann Kjome; grandchildren, Ryan, Mitchell and Kennen Dunn and Mollie Peters Glover; as well as loved nieces and nephews including especially close California nieces, Heidi McKinster and Lori Cox and husband Brian. Jane was the best daughter, sister, wife, teacher, mother, auntie, women’s advocate, counselor and friend.
Memorial services are private.
