I was thinking of Verna this morning and googled her only to learn of her recent passing. Verna was my very first boss as a freshly minted McGill MSW in 1988. I worked for her for 3 years at the Neuro. I am so grateful to her for inculcating a strong sense of identity as a social worker, one of independence, but collaboration. I often quote her when talking to my own MSW students telling them that we have to explain our role to other professionals. I start my little narrative when talking to students questioning their power as social workers in bureaucratic organizations with:,"I was so lucky to have had a great first boss.... who taught me to take my place and assert my role as a social worker...." Verna encouraged me to go on to do a PhD which I did and I credit her for that. She continues to be part of my identity as a social worker. I only hope I can touch others as she touched me. My condolences to Maria and to Verna's siblings and nieces and nephews. I am so sorry for your loss.

I met Verna in 1974 when she was doing field work where I worked while completing her degrees at McGill. We remained friends since then. 
I will miss her very much as I know everyone who knew her will miss her. She is so dear to us all.

I met verna in the mid-seventies through the Canadian Association of Social workers in Health Facilities.  I admired her for her leadership and innovative skills.   But I loved her for her warmth and great sense of fun.   Over the years we have kept in touch and, together with Maria, we have remained friends.  I extend my sincere sympathy to maria and her family: your lives will always be enriched by your memories of the wonderful person Verna was.   f.

Our family is very sad to hear of Verna's passing especially because we were going to visit her and then COVID-19 came.
We always felt that both Verna and Maria were our extended family in Montreal. Our whole family loved her. 
Verna was a loving friend, open, kind, gracious, generous, and hospitable.  She was a very grounded individual, practical and honest. We will miss her.
