George Robert Sheardown

It is with great sadness, we share that George Robert Sheardown has passed away peacefully in his home, in the arms of his beloved wife, Helen, on Tuesday, August 4th at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife, Helen Sheardown, children Darlene Whiting, Cindy Grant (Vern) and Allen Sheardown (Honora). He leaves a legacy of grandchildren: Jennifer (Steve), Andrew, Christopher (Jessica), Alexis (Ryan), Kaitlyn (Shane), Taylor (Quintin) and Savana (Jared). He will be dearly missed by his great-grandchildren Aimee, Mitchel, Tala, Malie, Hunter, Nathan, Max, Benjamin, Amellia, Solomon and Nora. He is also survived by his brother-in-law John Mack.

He is predeceased by his parents, Allen and Rita Sheardown, in-laws, Christina and George Mack, sister and brother in-law Doug and Marie Eigeard, son-in-law Doug Whiting and as George would say….“too many cousins and friends to count”.

George was born to Allen and Rita Sheardown on February 3rd,1935 in New Westminster, British Columbia. George spent his early years in Kamloops and moved to Prince Rupert during World War 2.

George graduated from Booth Memorial High School in Prince Rupert and attended business college in Vancouver. Upon returning, George became the Assistant Manager in the Rupert and then Kitimat grocery stores.

It was in Kitimat, that George met Helen Mack. She was from Prestonpans, Scotland. They were married on June 30,1956.

George and Helen moved to Penticton in 1957 where Darlene Christina was born. In 1958 George partnered with his father, Allen and bought a small corner grocery store in Lumby BC. George had a dream to build a complex in Lumby and he systematically worked toward that goal until the Shopping Complex you see today was created.

George’s family continued to grow in Lumby with the birth of Cindy Marie in 1959 followed by Allen George in 1962.

George served the Village of Lumby for years on the Board of Trade and Chamber of Commerce. He spent 25 years on the Lumby Volunteer Fire Department and spent time on the Curling Club and United Church Executives.

George always generously supported Lumby sports teams, service clubs and school projects and events.

George will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the community of Lumby.

There will be a Celebration of Life August 13th at 10:00 am at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home with a tea to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family would request that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation.
