Helen McHugh

Helen was born in Bauma, Switzerland, on March 26, 1941, and emigrated to Canada in 1957. She soon met her husband of 65 years, Brian, and together they built a life rooted in family, adventure, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. They raised their children, Jennifer and Brian, while sharing a love of camping, canoeing, hiking, and skiing. Some of their happiest years were spent exploring the Manning Park area, where they eventually built the cabin that became their cherished family retreat and, after retirement, their home.

Helen found joy in the simple things in life: nature, animals, camping, hiking, skiing, and time with family.

She had a deep appreciation for the natural world and loved being outdoors. She especially enjoyed feeding the wild birds who visited her, with a particular fondness for the ravens, and watching the bears and deer as they wandered through the property. She also deeply cherished the companionship of her dogs over the years.

Helen loved skiing with her grandsons. She took great joy in watching them discover the mountains she loved and always made sure they were properly bundled up. Her familiar reminder to zip up their ski jackets because, “If Gramma is cold, everyone is cold!” became a treasured family joke that still brings smiles today.

Helen was a kind and caring woman, with a quiet ability to find beauty and joy in the world around her. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her love of animals and the outdoors, and the unwavering love she shared with those closest to her.

Helen is survived by her son, Brian David McHugh, and her daughter, Jennifer Verena Bentley (Perry); her grandchildren, Michael (Leanne) Kepfer, Derek (Paula) Kepfer, and Colton Winiarski (Gabriella Schauber); her great-grandchildren, Hailey, Caeden, Kathryn, Brooke, and Michael Jr.; her brother, Ferdi Bretscher; her niece, Karin Schonthal Bretscher (Markus); and Karin’s daughters, Ramona, Loretta, Priscilla, and Joana.

Helen’s husband of 65 years, Brian Kenneth McHugh, passed away shortly after her. Together, they shared a lifetime of love, family and memories.
