It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret Covey. She was born in Halifax, grew up in NS, living most of her life along the south shore. She would later move to Winnipeg MB, Ottawa ON and Vernon BC, where she passed peacefully at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
She is survived by her three children: Dale Hanrahan (Ruby), Thompson MB; Darlene Woiden (Kelly), Vernon BC; and Dawn Hanrahan (Paul Deveau), Yarmouth NS along with her three grandchildren; Parker Hubley (Kayla), Ottawa ON; Leigh-Ann Woiden, Ottawa ON; and Y’na (Sheena) Penoliar, Thompson MB. She is also survived by four brothers: Robert Ewing (Marie), Truro NS; Donald Ewing, Hubbards NS; Douglas Ewing (Roxanne), Brighton ON; and Hilliard Ewing (Tammy), Middleton NS; along with several cousins, nieces and nephews. She has so many friends and extended family members who will also miss her dearly. She is predeceased by several immediate family members: her husband, Harvey Covey; her parents, Ronald and Vera Ewing, and 7 of her siblings; Ronald (Joe), Gordon, David, Jean, Grace, Lorraine and Stephen, a niece, Roberta Ewing and a son-in-law, Joseph Hubley as well as several extended family members.
Being the first girl, and fourth born of 12, she was never afraid of an adventure, always available for travel and she could be ready in 5 minutes or less. She loved her volunteering, crafts, diamond painting, and her holidays; Christmas being her favourite. Over the years she volunteered with many groups. In Nova Scotia she was associated with Brownies/Girl Guides, several church auxiliaries, school parental groups, IOOF MU, The Lionettes, Hubbards Fire Hall Ladies Auxiliary; she played on dart teams, bowling teams and a few crafting groups. In Manitoba she volunteered with Sir Sam Steele Legion, Seven Oaks Day Hospital, The Red Hat Society, and 1010 Sinclair Housing (where she resided for several wonderful years). In Ontario she again was part of The Red Hat Society, she donated and participated twice in The 5km Army Run; and in British Columbia she volunteered at The Schubert Centre. There are likely several others that we have missed mentioning. If anyone needed a spare set of helping hands, or something cooked or baked, they definitely called her.
Unable to work from a very young age due to illness and physical limitations, she didn’t let that get her down or stop her from doing just about anything she wanted to do. She had a heart of gold, nerves of steel, and she definitely was a force to be reckoned with; she was the red-head personified. She made friends with everyone everywhere she went. Her three children will tell you that one of their friends was one of her friends.
She loved such crafts as knitting, sewing, plastic canvas and in the last few years made so many diamond art paintings that she ran out of wall space. She could bake just about anything and will always be remembered for her ginger cookies, cranberry squares, peanut butter balls, rum balls, lemon squares and fruit cake.
Her family would like to extend a sincere Thank You to all of the doctors, nurses and health care professionals at Vernon Jubilee Hospital in the emergency department, diagnostic imaging and especially 2W Jubilee Bldg. Your superb care was comforting to her and her family. Thank you to the Community Nurses and all her friends who were always there to help her but especially to Anne and Allister Tutte, Pat Stacey, Christel Ellis and Cree Moondancer.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2026 in Hubbards NS, beginning with a church service at 11:00 am at St Luke’s Anglican Church, followed by the interment of ashes at Pine Hill Cemetery and a luncheon at the Fox Point Lions Club.
In lieu of flowers we ask that you consider a donation to Vernon Jubilee Hospital, a local hospital of your choice or your own favourite charity.
Your angel wings may have been ready but our hearts were not, they remain forever broken.
