Riley James Kelly

It is with immense heartbreak we share the passing of Riley James Kelly. Riley was born and raised in Vernon and spent his early years with his family - camping, fishing and spending hours at “the Farm” in Armstrong. He cherished his visits with both sets of grandparents. After graduating from Vernon Secondary School, he left to pursue an education in Natural Resource Science at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. After university, he returned to live a full life and career in fisheries and forestry and then completed his designation as a Registered Professional Forester. Riley enjoyed exploring all corners of BC and always returned to Vernon, his true home and where his family still resides. He knew every back road and every fishing lake. Being outside was where Riley was happiest, whether he was exploring somewhere new or returning to a familiar place. Many of his favourite adventures were shared with his life partner and fiancée, Jody.

Riley’s humour was subtle and sharp and though he appeared shy and quiet, he could make any friend or stranger smile and laugh. Those who knew him will remember his gentle presence, his wit, and his knowledge of the outdoors which he shared with the people he loved. Riley was also an avid golfer and keen hockey player. He loved the competition, camaraderie and friendships that came with both sports.

Riley passed away in Vernon at the age of 40, following a long and often hidden struggle with his mental health. Throughout Riley’s personal struggle, he continued to show up for his partner, family and friends. Riley cared deeply for those closest around him. His family, friends, co-workers, and wider community showed their immense support and love for him in his final days. Their outpouring of care was a powerful reflection of how deeply he was loved.

Riley is survived by his beloved life partner, Jody Bradwell; parents, Anne and Ken Kelly; sisters, Caitlin Kelly (Lee Crowther) and Samantha Cooper (Cory); beloved nephews, Corbin, Greyden and Luke; Grandma Erna Kelly and many other close extended family members.

You can honour Riley by walking in the forest, fishing on a lake or exploring an adventure on his behalf. Find a quiet place outside, take in the view, and remember Riley there.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date to reflect on the stories, adventures and memories that made his life so meaningful.
