Andy leaves his siblings, Richard and Judy, who were with him at his death, as well as many friends in Victoria and in Vancouver, where he lived for most of his life.
Andy grew up in the Gordon Head area of Victoria and spent much of his time outdoors, climbing trees, playing road hockey, and riding his bike with neighbourhood friends. It seems that he never arrived home without a torn piece of clothing or a new scab, but he could never remember how he’d done it – he was far too involved in whatever activity it was to notice. He was always up for a challenge or an adventure and happy with whatever outcome it brought.
After moving to Vancouver in 1975 and graduating from Hillside Secondary, Andy attended Capilano College where he studied landscape gardening. He had various jobs throughout the years, some related to landscaping and some not, but all of them active and outdoors, where he loved to be. This love of the outdoors translated to bike riding as his primary mode of transportation, and, more importantly, to sailing.
Having first learned to sail as a child, Andy became involved in dinghy racing in Vancouver at Hollyburn Sailing Club, and then later at Jericho Sailing Centre, where he was a fixture for more than twenty years. He held numerous positions at Jericho, including fleet captain and racing officer, and was long-time secretary for District 6 of the North American division of the International Laser Class Association. He also worked as a racing officer at Kitsilano Yacht Club and was an active member of the Disabled Sailing Association. His dedication to the racing community was recognized by his being named the British Columbia Sailing Association's "Volunteer of the Year" for 2010. He was made an Honorary Member for Life at Jericho Sailing Centre in 2018.
Andy was known for his ready smile, his ever-present willingness to help others, and his cheerful and friendly attitude. He spent much of his free time volunteering so that he could help others get out on the water, where he loved to be himself. He was a loyal friend who maintained the many relationships he developed throughout his life, and a loving brother and uncle. Andrew was a gentle soul with a big heart who had unfailing determination and a great sense of humour, two qualities that served him right to the end. We will miss him terribly.
Many thanks to all the friends and family who visited, called, emailed and otherwise supported Andy and us through his ordeal. There are too many people to mention here, but we are grateful to you all. Thanks also to the nurses at Victoria Hospice who cared for Andy so well.
If desired, donations in Andy’s memory can be made to the Disabled Sailing Association at http://www.disabledsailingbc.org/how-to-give.html.
