Charles was a man of curiosity, always seeking out new places to visit, good books to read, and thoughtful conversations that could last for hours. He came to Canada from Germany in 1954 and found a life of adventure, working in the north on the seismic lines, driving semi-trucks for awhile, and eventually settling in Calgary where he owned a floor-covering business for many years. Charles and his beloved wife Irene raised their children in a home full of love, classical music, good food, and many celebrations with extended family and neighbourhood friends. After his retirement, he and Irene moved to their home in Victoria, where they spent more time with Charles' sister, Ursula, and her husband Bill, and lived in a home surrounded by tall trees and views to the distant hills. Charles continued to live in his beautiful home after Irene passed away, eventually meeting Maggie, who became his dear friend and fellow traveler. Though life was sometimes difficult in his later years, he remained steadfast in his positive attitude and driven forward by his curiosity in the world. He was always interested in current events, news from Germany, and especially in the lives of others. He adored and was very proud of his grandchildren, Ben, Teddy (predeceased) Max and Val. He was intelligent and insightful, and above all, a kind, elegant, and gentle soul. We miss him and our hearts ache, but we are filled with deep gratitude for his life and know that he remains a part of all of us.
