M.D., F.R.C.S. (C), F.A.C.S.
January 16, 1935 – January 6, 2016
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years Shirley, children Sandra (David), Cameron (Janis), Susan (Chris) and David (Kim) and grandchildren Robert, Sarah, Leah, Margie, Duncan, Alexander and Owen. Don was predeceased by his father Nathaniel, mother Rhoda and brother Walter.
Don was born in Ottawa and moved to Edmonton, where he met and married his high-school sweetheart Shirley. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Alberta, interned at Calgary General, and completed his Fellowship in Urology Residency at Johns Hopkins and Ohio State University Hospitals.
In 1967 Don moved his family back to Calgary, where he practised until 1992, published in numerous medical journals, and at various times in his career he held the positions of Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of Calgary, Chief of the Urology Division at Foothills and Rocky View Hospitals and President of the Calgary Medical Society. In 1992 Don moved to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, where he worked until his retirement in 2013.
Don loved nature, and was a boater, hunter and keen athlete who operated a ranch near Turner Valley. He was also an avid collector of art, antiques, and aboriginal artifacts. A lifelong learner who enjoyed mentoring and sharing his expertise with others, Don was a dynamic individual who made a positive impact on many lives, and he will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 2:00 pm at St Ann’s Academy Auditorium, 835 Humboldt St. Victoria. Access via side entrance off Blanchard St.
Donations may be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation in Don’s memory.
