Dorothy was born in Quebec to Ernest Wing and Jean Taylor on September 21, 1930. A free spirited and accomplished woman, she focused her interests and began her education in Social Work, having graduated from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. Continuing her studies, she attended the University of Toronto and graduated there with a Bachelor’s degree in May 1960. She studied further, earning her Master’s in social work with the UofT, with completion of her thesis, ‘Fair Employment Practices in Ontario’, in September 1961. She had spent time in Toronto working with youth living in the streets of Toronto before embarking on her next adventure.
Fearlessly, as a young woman, she travelled around the world, and for a time lived in California studying at the USC School of Gerontology in December 1983. Later, a return to her roots in Canada, she chose Victoria to settle for the rest of her life, securing a position with the BC provincial government in social work with focus on aging, for 10 years. In September 1995 she was appointed to the Seniors Advisory Council.
Dorothy had many favourite past times over the years; she was an accomplished watercolour artist, a poet, an avid reader, a volunteer with the Royal BC Museum, and other interests include being part of an investment club for women, even a birthday club. She involved herself in the community and made many friends. She was a mentor who offered her support to her friends, colleagues and family when she could.
She had a wide group of friends; a very likeable person, with an enduring positivity about her, who was genuinely kind to everyone around her. Her life mattered to those who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Wing and Jean Taylor, her brothers Harry Wing, and Robert Wing.
She is survived by her sister, Pamela McCrea (Wing).
Her burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday April 17, 2026, at Royal Oak Burial Park.
