November 23, 1934 – January 22, 2026
Edward Michael Kochanuk passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, at the age of 91.
Born on November 23, 1934, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Ed was the youngest of twelve children and, in time, the last surviving member of his generation of siblings. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong sense of duty, discipline, and quiet determination—qualities that would define his life.
Ed proudly served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy for 23 years, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. A skilled and respected leader, he served as head of naval photographic units and was posted aboard HMCS Quebec, Crusader, and Iroquois during the Korean War. His career also included service as a United Nations Peacekeeper in Cyprus, reflecting his deep commitment not only to Canada, but to international peace and cooperation. He concluded his distinguished military career in 1975, with Esquimalt as his final posting. Ed was the recipient of many service citations including most recently the Ambassador for Peace medal for his service in the Korean War.
After his long military career, Ed embarked on another full career at the University of Victoria working in Building and Grounds, where he worked as a supervisor and touched the lives of a generation of maintenance staff at the University. He is remembered there for his incredible work ethic and being an accessible and affable leader there.
At the heart of Ed’s life was his family. He shared 59 loving years of marriage with his wife, Maureen, a partnership marked by devotion, mutual respect, and enduring affection. Together they built a life grounded in love, stability, and laughter.
Ed was a proud and devoted father to his three sons: Gregory Michael (Julie), Christopher Stephen (Farrah), and Bradley Warren (Briony). He took immense joy in his role as grandfather to Megan, Paige, Ivy, Violet, and Zoe, whom he loved fiercely and unconditionally. Ed was a constant presence in the lives of his nieces Lindsay (Darren) and Aleah, and their children Joey, Aria and Noah. To his family, he was a steady presence—reliable, kind, and deeply caring. He was a great dad and an amazing grandfather, always present, always supportive, and always proud.
Those who knew Ed will remember his quiet strength, his integrity, and his unwavering dedication to the people he loved and the country he served. His legacy lives on through his family, who will carry forward his values of loyalty, service, and love.
Ed will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice would be most consistent with Ed’s wishes.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Chief Petty Officer’s Mess at 1575 Lyall St. in Esquimalt, BC on Saturday, February 28 at 1 pm.
