Eloise Carol Emily Sweeney, 85, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2026, in the comfort of home, surrounded by family. Born March 17, 1941, in Calgary, her parents, Elsie and Gordon Nixon, moved to Sooke in 1946 when she was five. In 1958, she met the love of her life, Don, at a graduation dance at Milne’s Landing High School.
Eloise's life was full. She was very involved in her children's lives, leaving a lasting impact that carried on with her grandchildren. She was a Brownie leader, ball coach, and driver for her children, and many Sooke kids have fond memories of those times. She had a variety of creative talents, including crafts, decorating, flower arranging, gardening, and painting, and created bouquets, corsages, and cakes for weddings, and passed on her artistic talents to her daughters.
She was the Number One fan of her grandchildren's sports, supporting hockey and ball tournaments, going on bus trips travelling all through BC, and joining them in Toronto and Saskatchewan for fastball championships. She had many good laughs and memorable experiences, and another generation of young Sooke athletes benefited from her involvement.
Eloise was active in her community, including the Sooke Garden Club, helping establish the Sooke Region Museum, and, with her mother Elsie, helping at the annual Baby Show at All Sooke Day. She had many lifelong friends and loved travelling all over the world with friends and family. One of her favourite places was her cottage at Lake Cowichan, where she enjoyed countless fun weekends with family and friends. She also spent 10 years with the Coast Guard, including eight seasons working in the Arctic on the Nahidik.
Eloise is survived by Don, her loving husband of 67 years, their children Alicia (Tony) and Sharlene (Dan), and will be deeply missed by her four grandchildren Jenelle (Duncan), Brodie (Leanne), Brandon (Nick), Colby (Jacqueline) and eight great-grandchildren who affectionately called her Gram. She also leaves her brothers Murray (Connie) and Benny (Sandy) and many nieces and nephews. Eloise's memory will live on through her family, whose lives have been enriched by her unwavering love and support.
