

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Frances Mary Krug (nee Balding) at her home in Victoria, BC on August 24, 2026. Frances was born in Edmonton on January 17, 1995.
She is survived by her older brother Peter (Corlene) her niece Charlotte and her younger brother Andy (Susan) nieces Alison and Laura.
She was predeceased by her father William and her mother Audrey.
In her early years, Frances enjoyed summers spent at the lakeside cabin, family vacations to Jasper, Victoria, and floating down the Shuswaps on a houseboat.
She became an Ethnohistorian who earned a Bachelor of Education degree with distinction from the University of Alberta in May 1975. She attended graduate school at the University of Western Ontario from 1976-1978, earning a Master of Arts degree. In 1978 she became a graduate student at UCLA, advancing to candidacy for her doctoral degree in June 1980.
Francie had a great interest in history, space, genealogy, was an avid reader, and enjoyed building complicated Lego sets while listening to the Beatles.
She was an expert story-teller; her words fostered lifelong learning for those fortunate enough to listen.
Francie loved her mother deeply and was her dedicated caregiver for many years.
She treasured all of her dogs, Brandy, Big Red, Malinche and in her later years she enjoyed a quiet life with her faithful dog Sophie, taking in the tranquility of her condo overlooking the ocean and Mount Baker.
Francie will be dearly missed.
