Frederick Justus Anderson, age 77, of Victoria, British Columbia passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2021.

Frederick Justus Anderson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the first child of Fred and Betty Anderson and the first grandchild of Stanley and Olive Osborne and Kate Anderson. Frederick was called Rick by all family members and friends. He attended St. John’s-Ravenscourt School and the University of Manitoba where he studied economics. Rick joined Lakehead University as a member of the Department of Economics staff in 1966. While teaching he met Lynda Ohlgren who was getting an English degree. They were married in 1968. Always the adventurous sort, the newlyweds drove from Fort William, Ontario to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on their honeymoon. Two years later, Rick began graduate studies in economics at the University of British Columbia.

Rick’s major research interests have been in natural resources economics and regional economics. He has published more than 25 articles in Canadian and international journals in these fields as well as in microeconomic theory. Professor Anderson is also the author of several monographs, a book of readings in mineral economics and two textbooks used by Canadian economics departments in the areas of natural resources economics and regional economic analysis.

Professor Anderson served as chairman of the Economics Department from 1982 to 1984 and from 1987 to 1992. He has also served on several university committees including Senate Research Committee and the Promotion and Tenure Committee. He was on the Board of Governors of Lakehead University from 1987 to 1989. He was a member of the Executive Council of the Canadian Association from 1983 to 1986 and a member of the Johnson Prize Committee of the CEA in 1993-94. He served on the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies Polanyi Prize Committee in 1987-88. He has been a referee for several journals and a member of the editorial advisory board of the Canadian Journal of Regional Science. Professor Anderson held the Chair in Public Policy at the University of Western Ontario in 1992-93. Rick has taken great pleasure in his students and felt fortunate to have worked with highly professional colleagues whom he is proud to call his friends.

On retirement in 2001 Lynda and Rick moved to Victoria, British Columbia but continued to spend their summers at the Loon Lake cottage in Thunder Bay. Rick was known to be an avid reader who enjoyed opera, classical music and travel. He loved to walk daily and spend time with his family.

Rick will be deeply missed by his wife Lynda, daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Steve Chan, his son Karl and daughter-in-law Amy and grandchildren Jessica, Michael, Ashley and Caity. Other family members are his brother John Anderson and wife Briony, sister-in-law Kathryn Okell, brother-in-law Gary Ohlgren and his wife Lorraine and niece Katie Haig-Anderson.
