It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Gordie (to his friends and family) who died suddenly at home on June 26th. He is survived by his wife Margot, his daughter Lindsey and grandson Trenton, his son James (Laurent), sisters Glenna (Walt) and Shirley (Norm), nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Gordie was born to James and Edith in Kamloops, the eldest of three children and he moved with his family first from Kamloops to Dunbar (Vancouver) and then to Richmond in December 1960. Following high school Gordie studied to be a Baker and was apprenticed to a Bakery in 1972. His next career was with Coast Paper, first as an in-house salesman, during which time he met and married Mary, eventually moving with his family to Vancouver Island as salesman for the whole Island. He enjoyed a 35 year career, retiring in 2011. Gordie really enjoyed meeting up with other retirees from Coast Paper at their annual retirees’ luncheon to catch up with everyone’s gossip.
He will be greatly missed by his and Margot’s families and all who knew him, especially his hockey community and his long-time personal friends. Gordie was a people person who liked nothing better than to “shoot the breeze” with all he met. His great passion was hockey and following retirement this became his main occupation. He played three times a week and was a mainstay in helping in the organisation and running of many tournaments and an enthusiastic volunteer with his group, the Sidney Retreads, always willing to lend a hand with whatever was required.
A Celebration of Life is planned for August 10th at 2:00 p.m. at First Memorial in Royal Oak. Everyone welcome. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Gordie’s name to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.firstmemorialsaanich.com for the PHILLIPS family.
