It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Herman Gar Leung on June 3, 2026.
Born in Victoria, British Columbia, on January 16, 1935, Herman lived a life marked by dedication to education, service, family, and community. He graduated from Victoria High School, Class of 1953. Following graduation, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1953 to 1954 before embarking on a distinguished career in education. He earned his Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia in 1962 and later completed a Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Victoria in 1977.
Herman began his teaching career in Barriere, British Columbia, where he taught from 1955 to 1957. He then taught at Sooke Elementary School from 1957 to 1959 before serving as Principal of Saseenos Elementary School from 1959 to 1961. In 1961, he became Principal of Glen Lake Elementary School, a position he held for thirteen years. In 1974, he was appointed Director of Instruction for School District No. 62 (Sooke), serving in that role for fifteen years. In 1989, he was seconded to the Ministry of Education for one year and continued on contract with the Ministry for an additional year following his retirement. Herman retired in 1990 at the age of 55, leaving behind a lasting legacy of leadership and commitment to public education.
Herman was a devoted husband, a caring father, and a proud grandfather who took great joy in the accomplishments and happiness of those he loved. His family was an important part of his life, and he was known for his steady support, quiet strength, wisdom, and unwavering love.
Herman is lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 65 years, Verna Leung; his son, Glenn Leung (Miranda); his daughter, Lisa Liew; his granddaughter, Madison Liew (Michael); his grandson, Aven Leung; his sisters, Christina Mark and Rowena Yipp; and his brother, Raymond Leung (Shirley).
Herman enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Gorge Vale Golf Club for many years. He served as President of the Shon Yee Benevolent Association, Victoria Branch, from 1990 to 2003.
In accordance with Herman’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. His family is grateful for the love, support, and condolences received during this time and asks that Herman be remembered in your own way, through a kind act, a cherished memory, or a moment shared with loved ones.
Herman will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
