She was born April 30, 1929 in Saskatoon Saskatchewan to Clifford and Freda Porter. The family moved to Vancouver at her early age of 7. During that time she made life long friendships.
Mom met our dad Stan on March 6, 1948 at a YMCA dance in Vancouver. They were married 3 years later on a very snowy day in Vancouver on March 6, 1951. As dad was in the Navy, they were stationed to Victoria and bought a little house in Esquimalt on Lockley street. Mom and Dad had 5 children Shelley (Frank), Pam (Don), Janice (Gary) , Cliff (Myrtle) and Chris. 7 grandchildren Stephanie Cain (Daryl), Douglas Fisher, Robert Fisher (Nadine), Cheryl Ross (David), Kelly Sayers (Katie), Terry Sayers (Stephanie), Matthew Fisher (Miranda). 9 greatgrandchildren Riley Fisher, Taylor Hambley, Olivia Cain, Ellyot Cain, Ella Ross, Alexis Ross, Lillian Sayers, Levi Sayers, and Owen Sayers.
During dad's naval career the family was stationed in Churchill Manitoba,1959, Montreal Quebec 1968 and Victoria B.C. Mom stayed at home and took on all the jobs of the house. She was very resourceful sewing all our clothes, holding the household together while dad was away at sea.
Mom had many hobbies and crafts that she was interested in. Her ceramic interest developed into a ceramic teaching career within our home in View Royal that lasted for 20 years. Five days a week the small street of Jedburgh road was loaded with vehicles with everyone coming to ceramic classes. The students became life long friends of mom. She kept herself busy with her many activities, sewing, knitting, painting, crafting, visiting her group of friends for coffee or wine "doing her thing."
Mom and dad spent a lifetime together travelling the world making friends wherever they went. Those friends kept in touch over the years and visited mom and dad whenever they could. Many years were spent with old and new found friends in Desert Hot Springs, CA socializing, improving the park and having a wonderful time.
Moving to Selkirk Senior Village allowed mom to meet new friends, continue on with her hobbies and activities, and "I don't have to cook or clean!".
The family would like to thank the Selkirk staff in Assisted Living as well as Long Term Care for their supporting compassion and care for our mom.
