Jean-Michel Lavoie

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of our beloved Jean-Michel Lavoie, affectionately known as JM, who passed away in Victoria on June 5th, 2026 from autoimmune encephalitis at the age of 40.

Originally from St-Honoré, near Chicoutimi, JM was an avid reader since childhood. His lifelong love of learning led him to pursue a Master’s degree in chemical engineering and later study medicine at McGill University. He completed his postgraduate internal medicine training in Vancouver before specializing in cancer care (genitourinary oncology) where he could pursue his love of research and patient care. JM took great pride in doing the right thing, no matter how difficult the path, and in seeing people through the worst day of their lives. He left an indelible imprint on the many lives he touched. He will be remembered as a force of nature, with his sharp wit, his fierce intelligence and his integrity.

He is survived by his mother Chantale Tremblay, his father Guy Lavoie, his sister Maripier Lavoie, his grandmother Louisette Tremblay, multiple uncles, aunts and cousins, and the many beloved friends who make up his ‘chosen family’ in Quebec and in BC. Dr JM was beloved by patients and respected by his colleagues. His loss is keenly felt in all our hearts.

The family would particularly like to acknowledge his close friends, Valeria Stoynova, Olivier Desplantie, James Curtis and Richard Gagnon, and thank them for their help and support for Jean-Michel and his family during this trying event. A very special thank you to the staff of the intensive care unit at Victoria General Hospital for their invaluable care.

C’est avec le coeur lourd que nous annonçons le décès de notre cher Jean-Michel Lavoie, affectueusement surnommé JM, décédé le 5 juin 2026 à Victoria, BC d’une encéphalite autoimmune à l’age de 40 ans.

Autrefois de St-Honoré, près de Chicoutimi, JM était un lecteur passionné depuis son enfance. Son amour indéfectible pour l'apprentissage l'a amené à entreprendre une maîtrise en génie chimique, puis des études de médecine à l'Université McGill. Il a complété sa formation postdoctorale en médecine interne à Vancouver avant de se spécialiser en cancérologie (oncologie génito-urinaire), un domaine où il a pu se consacrer à sa passion pour la recherche et les soins aux patients. JM était fier de toujours agir avec intégrité, quelles que soient les difficultés, et d'accompagner les gens dans les moments les plus difficiles de leur vie. Il a marqué à jamais ceux qu'il a côtoyés. On se souviendra de lui comme d'une force de la nature, doté d'un esprit vif, d'une intelligence remarquable et d'une intégrité sans faille.

Il laisse dans le deuil son père Guy Lavoie, sa mère Chantale Tremblay, sa sœur Maripier Lavoie, sa grand mère Louisette Tremblay ainsi que de nombreux oncles, tantes, cousins, cousines et ses nombreux amis chers qui formaient sa “famille de coeur” au Québec et en Colombie Britannique. Dr JM était aimé de ses patients et respecté de ses collègues. Son absence est profondément ressentie dans tous nos cœurs.

La famille tient particulièrement à souligner ses amis proches, Valeria Stoynova, Olivier Desplantie, James Curtis et Richard Gagnon et les remercier pour leur aide et leur soutien à Jean-Michel ainsi qu’à nous lors de cet événement éprouvant. Un merci tout spécial au personnel soignant de l’unité des soins intensifs du Victoria General Hospital pour leurs précieux soins.
