Jim passed away far too soon on December 6, 2024 at the age of 63 years after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Jim is survived by the love of his life, Louise; his children Jackson (Rebecca) and Benjamin (Delaynee); his Grandchildren, Jameson and Carter; and his dog, Emma-Jean.
Jim was born in Edmonton Alberta to his late parents, Jack and Maxine, before eventually moving to Chilliwack BC for the remainder of his childhood. Jim was the eighth born of ten children (Ethel, Harvey, Guy, Janie, Tom, Emma, Leo, Chrystal, and William). Jim loved his siblings immensely and credits them for raising him by committee. His family is responsible for contributing to Jim’s tireless work ethic, admirable toughness and perseverance.
Jim eventually moved to Victoria BC which is where he would reside for the rest of his life. Jim was an Electrician by trade however, for those who knew Jim, knew that he was capable of much more than just electrical work. His family endearingly referred to him as the “Jim of all trades”. Jim was a dream employee and the hardest working guy in the room. Beloved and admired by his co-workers, he never complained, was never negative and the words “bad day” did not exist in his vocabulary.
Jim married the love of his life and soulmate, Louise who was with him hand in hand until the very end. Jim was a proud father of two sons, Jackson and Benjamin. His sons are forever grateful for their father’s teachings, leadership and love that he showed them their entire lives. Jim raised his boys to be the best versions of themselves. He led by example through work ethic, showed compassion and preached that it doesn’t cost a thing to be a good person. His generosity and kind spirit lives on through his sons as they try to emulate him every day.
Jim coached his boys in Hockey and Baseball and was known to many kids on the Peninsula as “Coach Jim”. Jim was a genuine leader and was someone who the kids looked up to and greatly admired. Jim had an immense impact on his community through his coaching and has created life-long memories for those who were lucky enough to have him as a coach.
Jim was also known as “Papa Jim” to his two grandson’s, Jameson and Carter. Although his time as Papa Jim was far too short, it truly was one of the proudest moments of his life. Papa Jim will never be forgotten.
A celebration of life will be set at a future date while the family mourns the loss of their beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Father-in-law, Uncle, Coach and Friend, Jim.
Jim’s family would like to express their extreme gratitude toward the Doctors, Nursing staff and Health Care teams at the Victoria General Hospital, especially 6th Floor acute care, as well as the staff and oncologists at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Your professionalism, compassion and care for Jim was remarkable and the family is beyond grateful.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the memory of Jim Skerratt to the BC Cancer Foundation.
