passed away peacefully one day after his 75th birthday. Ric leaves behind his wife Ruth, children; Olivia, Owen and Isak, and grandchildren; Eleni and Matteo Wood, Erich and Violet Elkington as well as his father Dick and younger sister Jane (Mark). He was predeceased by his mother Marguerite and sister Gerry.
Ric was born in Fernie BC and, due to his father’s career, lived across Canada (Fernie, Winnipeg, Toronto, Windsor, St. Johns). He attended St. John’s University for math and science, then on to the University of Waterloo for physics. Following this, in the early 70's, he lived in New Zealand. After returning he moved to BC with his daughter Olivia and partner Kate. Through the '80's he obtained his certification as a Naval Architect/Marine Engineer and began a successful career with Canoe Cove Yachts through the '90's. He then moved on to the federal department of PWGSC as a Marine Master, Supply Team Leader, Marine Acquisitions Specialist, until he retired.
He lived happily in North Saanich for 25 years with his wife, Ruth, raising his boys and renovating his home. In 2015, he suffered a major stroke which changed the course of his life. After this he was moved to Delta. He lived there 7 years missing his family and friends until he was able to return to Victoria for his last year. His family was overjoyed to have him back and create some happy memories together.
Ric was a man of many talents. He had successfully taken turns at being a potter, carver and cabinetmaker before becoming a Naval Architect. He enjoyed any time spent on the water, sailing, racing and prawning. He also did extensive work on the Elkington family tree. He loved life and was always ready for the next adventure. He was musical, had a good singing voice and was frequently the first and last one on the dance floor.
Ric will be interred during a private ceremony for immediate family. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
