Only child of Harold and Mae Morran. Lois lived with her parents on the farm in the Wicklow District, north of Grandview and went to the Wicklow School for two years. The family moved to Flin Flon where she completed her education.
In 1947, she entered Nurses Training at Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg and graduated obtaining the General Proficiency Award in 1950. After working a few months at Victoria Hospital, she went to Bermuda with, a few of her classmates, and worked as Head Nurse at King Edward V11 Memorial Hospital. In Bermuda she married Thomas Derek Abbott (Bud) who was born in England, and working as a Police Officer with the Bermuda Police. Their only daughter Susan (husband Colin Pain) was born there in 1952. That year they returned to Winnipeg where Bud worked for the Winnipeg Police. Mom carried on her nursing career doing private duty nursing and general duty at St. Boniface Hospital. In 1954, she returned to Victoria General Hospital and worked in the positions of Supervisor, Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of Nursing, moving to the new Victoria Hospital. In 1971. During these years Mom was active in the Manitoba Association of Registered Nurses and served on committees of the Canadian Nursing Association. She was named to the Honour List of the Manitoba Association of Nurses in 1970.
In 1975, she returned to work at Boniface General Hospital in the position of Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of Geriatric Nursing until her retirement in 1985. During this time she was an active member in the founding of the Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association and was conferred with a Honorary Life Membership in 1987. Mom moved to Victoria, British Columbia and worked as a Nursing Consultant with the Ministry of Health until her second retirement in 1989. Mom always lived her life her way and to the fullest. She met partner James Chambers in the late 90's and spent her time living in Mexico for half of the year and travelling to 34 counties with him until a few years ago. Jim passed away 5 weeks before Mom. I hope they are now together on the beach in Mazatlan enjoying a Margarita. Mom was blessed by professional, kind and loving care from all, at The Lodge at Broadmead. I cannot express my thanks enough to them for her care and support to me over the last months. If you wish to donate in her memory, please consider the Lodge at Broadmead in Victoria. Mom did not feel a service was necessary. A Graveside service will be held in Grandview, Manitoba later in the summer. It is her request to be buried next to her parents.
