Lois Ruth Godwin

July 27 1921 – February 27 2018

Dr. Ruth Godwin passed away peacefully with her longtime friend Helen Menzies Stoddard by her side on February 27 2018 at Saanich Peninsula Extended Care. Ruth was born in Calgary Alberta on July 27, 1921. She is predeceased by her mother Hilda Godwin, father John Godwin, two brothers Bruce Godwin, and Ted Godwin. Ruth is survived by her sister in law Phyllis Godwin, and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth received her Doctorate from Columbia University, New York in 1960. This made her one of the first women of Calgary to receive this honor. Over Ruth’s 40-year career in education, she inspired countless students and colleagues. Her career took her across Canada where she continued to earn the respect and admiration of those she met.

One of Ruth’s all-time favorite pastimes while living in Toronto was to visit New York City to attend Broadway shows and concerts. She retired to Victoria in the 1990’s were she became deeply involved in the Monterey Center and Oak Bay United Church. Ruth hosted many ladies’ bridge afternoons and dinner parties at her home.
