Surviving her are her children Avila (Alex), Marcia (Keith), Rese (Luis), Bonita and Vincenz, grandchildren Jordan (Sasha) and Carla (Phil), great-grandsons Chester and Bailey, and goddaughter Monica, who was with Magdalena at the end. She is also survived by sisters Marianna and Liesel of Germany, and their families: nephews Klaus, Rolf, and Jürgen (Monika), niece Renate (Andreas), grandniece Zöe and grandnephew Roman. Magdalena will also be missed by her step grandchildren, many step great-grandchildren, and other family members and friends on two continents. She was born on Oct. 27 in the village of Nürschan (now Nýřany) in what is now Czechia. She survived the Second World War and its aftermath before emigrating to Canada at age 18 after eight years in Germany. Magdalena settled in the Victoria area, which she totally loved. She worked hard to learn English, making friends, and taking care of her family. She also held down a variety of jobs (primarily for Island Health) before retiring. Her family was her world and her greatest joy was in following the activities and achievements of her children and their families. Whenever possible she also supported them by attending sports events and concerts, etc.
Magdalena enjoyed going to local parks, gardens and beaches. Her loved ones will miss her kindness, generosity, unapologetic directness, acerbic sense of humour, and her wonderful baking. (No funeral by request.) In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Victoria Women’s Transition House.
