Marija Orlickas, died on October 28, 2016 in Victoria. She was born December 19, 1920 in Liepaja, Latvia. She was predeceased by her husband Vladas and is survived by her sons; Algirdas (Wanda),Vytautas (Laurie) and Kestutis (Sara); her niece Aija Sedlak (John); step children, Agnieszka (Terry), and Dominic (Ania); and grandchildren; Gabriela, Elizabeth and Ana Linda. A Celebration of Life will be held November 17, 2016 at 2 pm at the Shoal Centre in Sidney, B.C. Marija came to Canada after the war with her husband and 3 sons. They settled in Hamilton Ontario where Marija worked as a waitress for many years. In 1979 Walter retired and they moved into the West End of Vancouver where Marija volunteered at the West End Seniors Centre. After the death of her beloved husband in 1998, she moved to Sidney to be closer to her son Stu and daughter-in-law Sara. Here in Sidney Marija continued to do volunteer work at the Beacon Community Services Thrift Shop where she passed many hours sorting toys and making friends. One of her favourite pastimes was walking around Sidney, seeing all the usual people on the street and feeling like a part of the community. Marija also loved to dance and would go to Friday night dances at the Army Navy Air Force Veterans Club. She loved music whether she was up dancing to it or just tapping her feet in her chair. In the last few years Marija developed dementia and had to quit her job at the Thrift Shop and her long walks around town. She was well known in many of the local shops and loved by all who knew her. She moved from her longtime home in Beechwood Village into the Shoal Centre and then into the Kiwanis Pavilion as her health deteriorated but she always had a smile and laugh for the people she met. She loved life and all it had to offer every day and continued to dance to the music until the end. She will be missed.
