Born January 23, 1928 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. May passed away peacefully January 9, 2021 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC.
Survived by her children John (Jan), Ian (Wendy), Ed, Patti (Rita) and Diane. May cherished her grand-children Shawna, Eric, Leah, Aaron, Angela, Jenna, Tracy, Kyla, and each of their respective spouses. May leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband Walter Sobkowicz in 2008, parents Emil Johnson and Anna Augusta Liese, siblings Mervin, Hazel, Wesley, Arthur, Pearl, Adaline, Fred, Nester, Edward, and Dewey.
May began work in Rocky Mountain House where she cared for neighbours’ children and did housework. She was involved in numerous chores helping to maintain the family property. The family eventually moved to Red Deer where she worked in some of the local hotels in Red Deer and Lethbridge.
After moving to Victoria, she married Walt and they raised their family. In later years, May worked in Food Services at UVIC.
May loved to garden and was kept busy raising and supporting her family. May enjoyed and made
beautiful needlepoints and also took up oil painting. Her favorite subjects to paint were trees and landscapes. It was always important to her to be able to pass these handmade items on to family members.
A special thank you to the Brio Care Unit staff at Berwick House on Shelbourne Street. This was home to May for many years. The family would also like to express gratitude to Dr. Ted Rosenberg, for his gentle, kind and caring relationship with our mom.
She was a great mother and we miss her terribly.
There will be no service at her request.
