Peter was born on August 8th, 1949, to Betty and Wally Zacour. He was raised alongside his sisters in Coquitlam, BC, at a time when it was still all farmlands. He spent many days playing baseball with close friends and neighbours in the farmers’ fields.
As a young man, Pete joined the RCMP and served for 26 years. His career spanned across Canada, culminating in Alberta. He was highly respected and decorated. When Pete retired, he took on a second career working at NAIT in Alberta, and then the University of Victoria as director of campus security before retiring.
Pete was an avid traveler, sports fan, and sunshine-seeker. He spent decades camping in the summers in Oyama, surrounded by his wife, children, family, and friends. Countless Okanagan children can thank Pete for teaching them how to swim in the canal. Camping, Christmases, and a beloved family trip to Cuba are core family memories. You could always count on Pete to share the latest Oilers, Seahawks, and Blue Jays updates. He had many lifelong friends with whom he stayed connected. Everyone will miss his texts and calls.
Pete and Dawn were world travellers, going across the globe on adventures together. They enjoyed the four corners of the world, glass of wine in hand. No destination had more pull for Pete and Dawn than Hawaii. It held a special place in his heart, and a place where their children and grandchildren would also join them to enjoy over the years.
Nothing brought Papa Pete greater happiness than spending time with his grandchildren. They were his pride and joys. Every grandchild has a special memory with Papa, from hide and seek in the pantry and stealing hats to spelling words to doing puzzles and Papa taking special care of you when you’re sick. The kids loved going to the park, getting underducks, and always knowing there would be special treats that Papa had stashed away for them. So many of their best memories with Papa were centred around Hawaii; getting to the beach early before anyone else, doorless helicopter tours, submarine rides, playing cards, and endless pool time! Hannah, Ryan, Lucy, Jordan, Tatum, Sylvin, Emmett, Mimi, Jaxon and Gus will deeply miss their Papa.
It is a profound loss for our family and those who knew him. He leaves behind his loving wife, Dawn, children Marshall (Heather), Michael (Phia), Missy (Daniel), and Brittany (Ryan), goddaughter Trisha (Scott), nieces and nephews, extended family and numerous friends near and far.
Peter was a planner, and at his request no service will be held. His ashes will be spread at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. Peter was full of great stories, please feel free to share a story in the comments.
