With her children Rowena and Gary by her side Ulla passed away peacefully July 7, 2022, in Victoria, BC. Born in 1930 in Linz, Austria Mom was a fiercely independent woman. She immigrated to Canada in 1957 after ending her marriage and as a single Mom with her 4-year-old son Gary made her way across Canada settling in Vancouver. Mom had a second marriage in Canada to Leland Locklin from 1962-72 and had her daughter Rowena from this marriage.
One of her first jobs in Vancouver was working at the Aristocratic Restaurant but she had other plans. Almost immediately she started doing University courses and was eventually able to finish University as a mature student and graduated from UBC in 1969, later getting an MSW in 1974. Her career in Social Work led to Victoria working with youth. Mom was also an excellent secretary both here and in Austria and returned to that near the end of her working career after retiring from social work.
She was first able to return to visit Austria in 1974 and then returned several times to visit family and school friends. Mom kept a wide circle of friends and was very social, enjoying many coffee outings. She was an enthusiastic cook and loved her kitchen gadgets! She kept up many correspondences for decades. Mom was tough, determined, and generous. She was very modern, adopting computer technology and cell phones years before her kids! She will be missed by her children Gary and Rowena and her cherished grandchild Kieran, as well as her dear brother Gerhard Tiefbrunner in Vienna and extended family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday August 16th 10am at First Memorial 4725 Falaise Dr.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ulla’s memory can be made to Covenant House in Vancouver supporting at risk youth or a charity of your choice.
