Virginia was born in Victoria, BC on November 5, 1932, the eldest of 3 sisters. She spent her early life growing up in James Bay, riding her bike to the park and learning to swim off the breakwater. She began her work life at a bank and the DND. She met dad, who was in the navy, and they married in 1952. The first of 3 babies arrived in 1953 and mom devoted the next 2 decades to raising their 3 children. She began volunteering for the local elementary school in the early 70’s and then eventually transitioned to full-time work for the Victoria School Board until she retired. Throughout her life mom further supported her community with endless hours of volunteering for the Legion Poppy Campaign, Santa’s Anonymous, Arthritis Society, CNIB, Safeway, the Royal BC Museum, and the Commonwealth games. She participated in many 5K walks to support multiple causes. She was an active member of the Daughters of the Nile for many years, supporting Shriner Hospitals for Children. She was known for always being very active and on the go and was fondly referred to as our “energizer bunny”. She found great enjoyment in reading, retail therapy, a glass of wine, Beacon Drive-In ice cream and visiting the shores of James Bay. Family was also a central part of her life, and she enjoyed family dinners and many great trips that included camping, Disneyland, Hawaii and cruises. Mom was also an incredible baker with her chocolate chip and shortbread cookies, notably scrumptious. Mom lived her life with quiet grace and consistently put others before herself. Her heart was full of gratitude, and she always found something to be thankful for. We are endlessly grateful for every moment we had with you.
Much thanks and gratitude to Mount St. Mary Hospital and their extraordinary staff for the compassionate care and endless support to the family. Thank you to Denise, for her support and guidance. Thank you to all the amazing RNs, LPNs and care aides for their exceptional care and unwavering support that allowed Virginia to live her final days with dignity and comfort. Special shout out to Dave and Lynn for going above and beyond. Our hearts are full knowing our mom received such incredible care.
A reception honoring Virginia will take place at First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Dr, Victoria, on Monday, October 27th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victoria Hospice or the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
