Born in Vancouver BC on February 13, 1938 to Charles Alexander and Wilda Grace Dawson, Merle graduated from Lord Byng High School and went on to earn her teaching certificate from UBC in 1958. For several years, Merle found great joy in teaching Grade 1 before choosing to stay home to raise her family. As her children grew more independent, she returned to the workforce, working at several bakery deli’s before buying and operating her own. She loved to bake and was a very active hobbyist, making beautiful quilts, several of which won awards. Each of her 13 grandchildren received their own personalized quilt.
Merle met George, the love of her life, and in 1974 they married and blended their families. Merle had many health challenges in her life, which she and George together faced bravely. Throughout these struggles, Merle and George continued to travel the world and maintained a rich community of friends through Oak Bay United Church and the Victoria ALS Society. She was very active in the church and strong in her faith.
Merle will be dearly missed by family and friends, may she rest in peace, wrapped in God’s love.
A memorial service will be held for Merle at Oak Bay United Church on September 19, 2026 at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow.
