Craven, William (Bill) September 13, 1926-October 22, 2021

Peacefully, Bill passed away at home. Born in Victoria, he was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Dorothy, and sister-in-law Marilyn. Bill is survived by Barbara, his wife of 72 years, and four children; Bill (Karen) of Campbell River, David (Susan) of Courtenay, Bradley (Charlotte) of Fort St. John and Brenda (Michael Cedar) of Victoria, nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, brother Robert (Bob) and three nephews. Bill attended school at Sir James Douglas, Margaret Jenkins, Willows and graduated from Oak Bay High in 1944. After graduation he joined the army and served until the end of World War II. Returning home, he attended Victoria College and then joined the Provincial Government in the Assessment Department, and continued in that field throughout his working career. He held various positions with the City of Victoria, the District of Saanich and the British Columbia Assessment Authority, retiring from them as Area Assessor, in charge of southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. On retirement, Bill had served 39 years in the assessment field and had earned degrees from the Real Estate Institute of B.C., Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute and B.C. Assessors Association. Bill met Barbara in 1947, and they were married in 1949. Over the years they travelled abroad many times, but boating was always their major interest, and upon retirement it became their foremost activity. In 1961, Bill built their first runabout, behind which the entire family learned to waterski! After that came purchases of another runabout, two sailboats and then two powerboats. Bill and Barb became members of the Capital City Yacht Club in 1993, in which Bill rose through the ranks, to become Commodore, in 1998. Bill was also passionate about walking, hiking, backpacking and partook in a number of running marathons. A quiet gentleman, who always saw the best in everyone, and was always willing to give, more than he ever expected to receive. At Bill’s request, there will be no service. If you wish, tributes may be made to a charity of your choice, in his name.
