July 8, 1940 – February 20, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Jackson Murphy, a devoted son, loving husband, proud father and grandpa, brother, and cherished friend. Bill was born on July 8, 1940, in Thompson Sound, British Columbia. Growing up along the coast, he spent his childhood surrounded by the beauty of British Columbia’s shoreline, developing a deep appreciation for the ocean that would remain with him throughout his life.
Bill’s career began with a water taxi business, a fitting start for a man so connected to the sea. He later attended vocational school and became a skilled welder, a trade that reflected his steady hands, sharp mind, and strong work ethic. In 1971, Bill began what would become a long and distinguished career at BC Vocational School, which later became Camosun College as a Welding Instructor. Over the years, through dedication and leadership, he advanced from Welding Instructor to Acting Dean. He remained at Camosun College until his retirement in 1999, shaping the lives and careers of countless students and providing a wonderful life for his beloved family. Even in retirement, Bill continued to contribute his expertise, working as a Welding Inspector with the Welding Bureau.
On October 7, 1967, Bill married the love of his life, Linda. Together they built a beautiful life grounded in love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. They raised their two daughters, Cindy and Sherry, and created a home filled with warmth and adventure. As a family, they traveled to Hawaii, California, Mexico, and Alberta, making treasured memories along the way.
Bill’s love of the outdoors extended into his years sailing the Gulf Islands with Linda, embracing the peace and freedom of life on the water. His passion for the ocean had begun years earlier while living up the coast on Minstrel Island, and it never faded. In retirement, Bill and Linda enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel, spending many happy winters in Yuma, Arizona, one of their favorite places to relax and unwind.
Bill’s greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren; Tyler, Graham, Paige, and Kayleigh. He devoted countless hours being present in their lives. He volunteered with Victoria BMX, fixing and operating the starting gate and could always be heard cheering Tyler and Graham on at their races. He spent many hours at the hockey rink with Graham, bundled up in the stands with a proud smile. He enjoyed watching Paige perform in dance recitals and musicals, and he was a constant, enthusiastic presence at Kayleigh’s baseball games. Bill also volunteered in each of his grandchildren’s classrooms, attending field trips and school events whenever he could. He was endlessly proud of each of them and never missed an opportunity to show it.
One of Bill’s greatest blessings was meeting his great-granddaughter, Grace. He treasured their time together, trips to the park, sharing lunch, and exchanging high-fives. Those simple, beautiful moments meant the world to him.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Linda; his loving daughters, Cindy and Sherry; his adored grandchildren, Tyler, Graham (Cassie), Paige (Patrick), and Kayleigh; and his precious great-granddaughter, Grace. He is also survived by his brother Mike (Marine), his sister Pat, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Doris and Murf; his brothers Jackie, John, and Dennis; his sisters Bridgette and Sharon; and his son-in-law Gary.
Bill will be remembered for his steady strength, generous heart, unwavering devotion to his family, and the quiet way he showed up, every single time, for the people he loved. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jervis and the doctors and nurses at Victoria General Hospital and Gorge Road Health Centre for their care and support.
A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. (PST) at First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be available under the Services section of the obituary page.
