Betty Hightower Schatz was born on March 14, 1944, in Huntsville, Texas, to Gladys and Dolly Hightower. She was raised in Huntsville and carried her love for her hometown with her throughout her life. Betty went home to be with the Lord on January 20, 2026.
After graduating from high school on May 24, 1962, Betty spent several years working for the government in Africa—an experience that reflected her adventurous spirit, strong work ethic, and willingness to serve. On September 7, 1968, she married the love of her life, Lyndon Schatz, and together they later made their home in Victoria, Texas. In 1969, on her birthday, Betty was baptized at First English Lutheran Church and confirmed on March 30, 1969, a meaningful milestone in her faith journey.
Betty was an avid reader for much of her life, finding joy and comfort in books until her eyesight failed. She also had a deep love for bingo—Wednesdays were sacred and dedicated to bingo time. One of Betty’s greatest joys was baking for others. If she knew you had a birthday or a special occasion, you could always count on a homemade pound cake made just for you. Baking for others was one of the many ways she showed her love.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Mona Minter, Ann Koenning, Peggy Kroesche, and Mary Ellen Chron; and her brother, Buck Hightower.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Lyndon Schatz; her children, Les Schatz and Suzanne Brooks (Michael); her granddaughter, Madi Schatz; her brothers, Clarence Hightower (Susan) and Gerald Hightower; and many extended family members and friends who were blessed by her kindness, faith, and generous heart.
