Ernie Paul Byrd, of Victoria, TX, passed away on May 13, 2026 at the age of 73. He was born on July 20, 1952 at Fort Campbell Army Base in Kentucky to Eddie and Alice Arnold Byrd while his father was stationed at Sewart Air Force Base in Tennessee. Ernie graduated from Stroman High School in 1970 and attended Victoria College.
Ernie had an industrious, innovative spirit and a keen eye for identifying problems for which he was quick to generate solutions. Since his days as a hay-hauling teenager, he was determined to make it on his own steam and insisted on being his own boss. These complementary qualities led him to become an inventor on two US Patents — one for a fan-favorite gardening/trenching tool and another for "Shopping Cart Armrest Handles" that help mobility-impaired shoppers move through stores with greater ease and comfort.
In addition to his early stretch as an expert mobile home mover, he had a long career building, moving, and reselling portable buildings as owner of Byrd Portable Buildings. He took great pride in the quality and design of his custom buildings which gave him a solid word-of-mouth reputation. Under his tutelage, he helped several young men gain tangible and intangible skills which aided them in the next stages of their lives.
Being his own boss for decades gave him a mean independent streak that equipped him to challenge authority with ease. He knew in his bones that "fighting city hall" meant putting skin in the game and speaking truth to power when duty called. He never hesitated to ruffle feathers while calling a spade a spade. While this sometimes made him feel isolated and challenged his resolve, he knew in his heart he was doing the right thing, even in the face of ridicule and backlash. On several occasions, his ability to identify problems allowed him to shed light on local issues others couldn't see, some of which are still in the process of being remedied with no fanfare.
He also had an insatiable need for speed. Whether it was in a hot rod burning up the asphalt, in a stock car slinging dirt into the bleachers, or on a Harley-Davidson taking tight corners on country roads, he found a way to blow his own hair back and leave some rubber behind. He loved the camaraderie that came with harnessing power for thrills and made many lasting friendships in these pursuits.
Ernie was known for being a loyal, dependable friend, and this was especially evident in how his friendships rewarded him in kind in his times of need. He maintained many strong, meaningful friendships since high school as well as making many lasting connections along the way. His network of good friends was the real undercurrent that kept him going, especially when his health was failing him. He never took this for granted.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Raymond Eddie Byrd, and niece, Holly Billetter. He is survived by his son, Chad (Meridith) Byrd of Victoria, TX; daughter Alley Byrd of Buda, TX; sisters, Linda Byrd (Dave) Billetter of Kyle, TX, and Gloria Byrd Fric of Victoria, TX; grandchildren, Evan and Avery Byrd of Victoria, TX; nephews, Joe and Troy Fric of Victoria, TX, and Mark Billetter of Kyle, TX; nieces, Laura Billetter of Hong Kong, China, and Heather Billetter of Kyle, TX; and his dogs, Wiggles and Luna.
A memorial service to celebrate Ernie's life will be held at Rosewood Funeral Chapel on Thursday May 21, 2026 with a visitation at 4-6pm and a service at 6-7pm. His family would love to hear your funny, light-hearted stories about Ernie. He would want to send his friends and family home with smiles on their faces. Please dress casually and comfortably.
