

Jack Braxton Summers, age 93, of Katy, TX (formerly of Victoria) passed away on September 3, 2013 after having suffered a stroke 2002. Jack was born on May 2, 1920 in Rosebud, TX to Robert and Ruth (Freeman) Summers. Jack attended the Rosebud schools and graduated as Valedictorian in 1939. After graduation he attended Baylor University for one year, worked for a year and then volunteered to serve one year in the U.S. Army. When the war erupted, he was assigned to the 165th Infantry, a New York National Guard Unit called the “Fighting 69th”. He spent 3 1/2 years in the Central Pacific Theatre of Operations. His unit invaded Makin Island and they aided the Marines in capturing Saipan and Okinawa.
Reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant, he was honorably discharged and entered the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a BBA and a Master of Education. He taught public school in Edinburg and Victoria, TX for 33 years before retiring in 1983. For the next 15 years he volunteered at Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, leading the Math Counts program. His students won first place the first 4 years and placed first or second in many of the following years. His other volunteer activities included teaching math at Profit High School, tutoring inmates at the Victoria County Jail, VCAM, American Cancer Society, Hospice of South Texas and Grace Presbyterian Church.
Jack is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Bettie Eckelkamp Summers; his sons, Lee Pantermuehl (Robin), Robert Pantermuehl (Susan), John Summers (Chastity); daughter, Sheri Pantermuehl; grandchildren, Scott (Samantha) and Mark Pantermuehl; Christopher and Nicholas Summers; great grandchildren, Emmalin, Lillian, and Alex Pantermuehl. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Summers; sister, Annie Ruth Glass; one niece, three nephews and their children.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Fleming Summers.
A visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 from 1 to 2 pm followed by a Memorial Service at 2 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 1801 E. Red River, Victoria, TX. Dr. Jeannie Stanley, Pastor, of San Gabriel Presbyterian Church, Georgetown, TX will officiate.
