She lived in Austwell until the age of 11, the family then moved to Point Comfort where she was raised. Nelma was a 1959 graduate of Calhoun High School and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Texas Women’s University in Denton. While working as a school librarian, she received her Master’s Degree. After 33 years of dedicated service with TRS, she retired in May 1997 from Palacios ISD.
Nelma enjoyed hobbies, such as painting, crocheting, reading, working the daily crossword puzzles in the newspaper and wrapping shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child Ministry at her church. She loved each little dog that she owned throughout her lifetime. She faithfully attended Northside Baptist Church and volunteered in the church library as long as her health allowed.
She is survived by her sister, Linda (Wayne) Boone of Victoria; brothers, David (Jean) Chamrad of Port Lavaca and Frank (Mary) Chamrad of Point Comfort; nieces, Brenda Georgie and Barbara Fox; one great niece and three great nephews.
A visitation will be held from 12 to 1 pm, Friday, February 6, 2015 at Colonial Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held 1:30 pm at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery, located between Victoria and Port Lavaca, with Brother David Hudson officiating.
The family would like to extend special thanks to all staff at Sodalis Elder Living for their compassionate care and to her friends, Nell Gill, who never stopped calling and continued praying for Nelma and to Rosemary Ayres, who never forgot to send her a card on all special occasions.
