Stayton retired on May 27, 1982 after 37 years from Victoria SWCD. His other accomplishments include his outstanding military service in World War II and a rifle instructor award in 1964 (U.S. Army marksmanship unit), the 30 year safe driving award, Outstanding Farmer, presented by Victoria Soil and Water Conservation District, past president of Lodge of Hermann Sons, served on Youth Activities Committee at Comfort, Texas at the Hermann Sons Youth Camp , Outstanding Adult Leader for the Victoria County 4-H Club, a trustee of the Hochheim Prairie, the grower of the Super Turnip. He previously worked with the Soil Conservation District in LaGrange and Yorktown.
Mr. Flowers is survived by his wife, Ollie Olsovsky Flowers; daughter, Debbie (Cliff) McCreery of Beaumont; son, James Edward Flowers of Victoria; sister, Wyvonna Bell Walker of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren, Buck Flowers, Erica McCreery, Tony Flowers and four great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sons, James Lee Scherer and Stayton T. (Tommy) Flowers II.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 from 9-10 AM at the First English Lutheran Church, with the funeral service to begin at 10 AM with Rev. Jim Pearson officiating. Burial with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria Veterans Council will be held at Wood Hi Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bruce McDonald, Dwight McDonald, Daniel House, Howard Book, Brian Book and Steven Morino.
In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to First English Lutheran Youth Church Camp, 516 N. Main, Victoria, Texas, 77901.
