Michael Anthony Mercadante passed away peacefully on March 28th, 2025 at the age of 101. Born on September 20th 1923, he was known for being an active member of his communities, his love of his country and faith, and the patriarch of his large family. His compassion, quick wit, humor, and ability to tell a story, add to the “character” that we will all remember fondly. His generosity and kindness touched the lives of many and he will be dearly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
He was married to Catherine “Kay” L. Fry for 55 years and is survived by his children Connie Hahn, Kathy Johnson, Michael J. Mercadante, Mary Jadwin, Steve Mercadante and Rob Mercadante. He also is survived by 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Michael's life was characterized by his hard work. He served as Master Sergeant Mercadante in the army during WW2 and remained in the reserves for over 30 years. Upon return he was a graduate of Bryant University, also taking vocational classes at UCLA. He worked as a teacher at South Bay Union High School in Redondo Beach for 30 years, while doing construction jobs with two of his close friends on the side.
During his early years he was also busy coaching his childrens sports, in bowling leagues with family, and an active member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Summers were always highlighted with family camping and travel across the states. In retirement he was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association, Knights of Columbus, Citizens on Patrol, the Senior Honors Program of Silver Lakes, and participated in singing and dancing with The Silver Lakes Players.
