My FATHER
My father is a GREAT man. He was a godly man. He taught me so much about life. I would love hearing about his travels while in the navy. I loved spending time with him on the different ships he would be stationed on. As I was growing up we would assemble models together. He showed me how to fix things from cars to home repairs. He would always do over and above.  But the lesson that was there for me was to not do any job half way but to always strive for perfection in all that I endeavor to do or become more in my life. I learned about the word poppy-cock which was the way he would let me know that he knew when I was saying something unbelievable. He taught me the value of respecting other people and their property. As I grew into adulthood and even till his last days he was always there for that fatherly advice when I asked for it. Whether I took it or not he allowed me to make my own decisions and if I found his advice was the right way to go he would never said I told you so. He would ask me how I am going to get out of that situation always looking over my shoulder with that gentle nudge in the right direction to give me the feeling of accomplishment, to be proud and own it. As I became a father I finally understood the meaning of the phrase “this is going to hurt me more than it’s going to hurt you”. You showed me the love you had for me. For I know I wasn’t the perfect son. There’s not enough time in life to explain all that my father has taught me or done for me. I believe that god had put him on this earth to truly be my guardian angel from my birth until he takes me to join him in heaven. The main thing that I have learned is the world is full of fathers but it take a special loving man to be a dad and in my nearly 65 years of life I can honestly say that I am proud to say that you are my daddy. I can only hope that through the love you showed me my own children will be able someday say those words of me.

TO THE DEAREST MARY ANN & FAMILY,

OUR HEARTS ARE HEAVY AT THE LOSS OF ED - SUCH A STELLAR LEADER, KIND AND COMPASSIONATE INDIVIDUAL, WHOSE  UNSTINTING GENEROUS DEVOTION TO THE OLD DOMINION SQUADRON HELPED TO KEEP THE  VINTAGE AIRCRAFT FLYING .  ED TAUGHT GENERATIONS THE IMPORTANCE OF HONORING AND PRESERVING MILITARY ARTIFACTS, TRADITIONS,  AND VALUES.   HIS KEEN WISDOM  AND LEADERSHIP HELPED TO BRING THE NAVY S-2 TRACKER TO THE SQUADRON AND HE PERSONALLY RESTORED A MILITARY GUN TURRET THAT WAS VIEWED BY THOUSANDS AT AIRSHOWS.     ED ENJOYED MANY DAYS OF FLYING AND AS SQUADRON LEADER OVERSAW THE DAY-BY-DAY PROBLEM-SOLVING  OF AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE.  HE  ORGANIZED MEETINGS, TRAINING, AND EVENTS - (SUCH AS THE ANNUAL SQUADRON CHRISTMAS BENEFIT AUCTION - GREAT FUN FOR ALL).   WITH HIS MATTER-OF-FACT SENSE OF HUMOR ED MOTIVATED OTHERS AS HE WORKED SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH MEMBERS TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOAL - TO GET THE AIRCRAFT SAFELY UP AND DOWN.    ED'S TENACIOUS DEDICATION TO DETAIL WAS EVIDENT IN HIS MILITARY MODEL COLLECTION THAT HE LOANED TO THE SQUADRON.  AS ED'S EXECUTIVE OFFICE , I SO ADMIRED HIS LOVE OF FLYING WHICH  DROVE HIM TO PUSH FORWARD IN SPITE OF ANY OBSTACLE.  I LEARNED FROM ED THE STRUGGLES OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE AND APPRECIATED ED'S STELLAR PATH - TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE.  HE IS TRULY ONE OF AMERICA'S GREAT - AND I SEND HIM MY RESPECTFUL NAVY SALUTE AS HE JOURNEYS.  BELOW IS A POEM THAT PAYS TRIBUTE TO ED'S LOVE OF THE SKY - WE HOPE IT BRINGS COMFORT TO YOU  MARY ANN AND YOURS:

Because I fly
I laugh more than other men
I look up an see more than they,
I know how the clouds feel,
What it's like to have the blue in my lap,
to look down on birds,
to feel freedom in a thing called the stick…

who but I can slice between God's billowed legs,
and feel then laugh and crash with His step
