Nell Nancy Montgomery, a firecracker of a woman whose love and zest for life knew no bounds, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home in Visalia, California. Born on January 3, 1933, in Uvalde, Texas, she was the cherished daughter of Nellie Lorraine Johnson and Richard Henry, and the beloved sister of World War II veterans Richard and Chuck Hokit.
Nancy’s story is one of resilience, laughter, and a heart big enough to hold everyone who crossed her path. She is survived by her son, Mark Montgomery, five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren (with more on the way!), and a lifetime of memories that will forever leave smiles on the faces of those who knew her. She now joins her husband and high school sweetheart, the late Mr. Montgomery, whom she met as a vivacious cheerleader while he dazzled on the football field. Their love story, which began in 1951, blossomed into a beautiful marriage in 1952. Together, they raised two sons: the late Daniel Patrick Montgomery (1953–2006) and Mark Thomas Montgomery (born 1954).
From the bustling streets of Oakland to the wide-open spaces of Fresno, and finally to Visalia in 1968, Nancy’s journey was full of adventure. She wore many hats over the years: waitress at a lively hamburger joint, manager of a bustling bar and restaurant, and an employee at Porterville State Hospital. But it was at Outside Creek School where she truly left her mark, dedicating 32 years to shaping young minds as a teacher’s aide—a role she adored until her retirement in 2003.
But Nancy’s career was just one facet of her radiant personality. A true force of nature, she filled every room with energy and joy. Her garden was her sanctuary, where she harvested fruits and walnuts to craft her legendary homemade jams and cookies. She had a talent for turning simple moments into something extraordinary—whether it was whipping up her famous tacos for friends and family or hosting impromptu gatherings in her home, which was always a safe haven for anyone in need. Every one of her grandsons spent time living with her, soaking up her wisdom, warmth, and boundless love.
Nancy had an undeniable love for adventure. From camping trips and fishing outings to walking in the great outdoors, she found peace in nature. But when it was time for fun, she headed straight for the local casinos, where she never missed a chance to play bingo or hit the slots with her lifelong best friend, Frankie. They made quite the dynamic duo!
A passionate animal lover, Nancy could never turn her back on a stray in need. Her home was often filled with four-legged friends she’d rescued, nursed back to health, and found loving homes for. If there was an animal in trouble, you could count on Nancy to be there, ready to lend a helping hand.
Nancy spent her final years in Visalia, surrounded by the family and friends she had so lovingly nurtured throughout her life. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity that will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.
Nancy, you were one-of-a-kind. We’ll miss your stories, your laughter, and your heart of gold—but we’ll carry your spirit with us always.
