Virginia was born to Nellie and John Wilson in Fayetteville, Arkansas on October 15, 1923, one of 13 siblings. At an early age, the family migrated west to Arvada, Colorado where Virginia spent her formative years, graduating from Arvada High School. She met her now deceased husband, Joseph A. Hill “Jack” in Oakland, California where Jack served in the Navy. After Jack’s stint in the Navy, they moved to South Carolina and began a family.
Besides being a caring and devoted mother and wife, Virginia served the First Baptist Church in West Columbia for most of her adult years. She was committed to the church and its mission and felt most fulfilled through her work with the functions of the church and in helping others. She was a member at First Baptist for 76 years.
Virginia is remembered by her sons as a life-long caregiver, a woman of high character, a role model, a tireless worker, a task master at times, and someone who had a quip or truism for every occasion. Virginia was also known for her creativity and work designing custom window treatments for many residents throughout the Columbia metropolitan area.
Virginia is survived by her four sons, Thomas W. Hill, J. Steven Hill, Gary L. Hill, and Wesley K. Hill; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Epworth Children’s Home in Columbia.
