

In loving memory of Dr. Robert W. Bower, born on June 12, 1936, in Santa Monica, CA, and peacefully passed away on January 27, 2024, at his home on Maui. A trailblazing inventor, he pioneered the Self-Aligned Gate MOSFET during his tenure at Hughes Research, earning induction into the Inventors Hall of Fame. An esteemed Air Force Veteran, Robert earned his A.B. in Physics from UC Berkeley, followed by an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Cal Tech.
In addition to his groundbreaking work on the Self-Aligned Gate MOSFET, Dr. Bower was the proud recipient of the Ronald H. Brown American Innovator Award and the Cal Tech Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to innovation and academic excellence. Furthermore, his esteemed reputation extended to being elected into the National Academy of Engineering and honored as a Life Fellow of the IEEE, solidifying his influential role in shaping the fields of semiconductor electrical engineering and technology.
Dr. Bower is survived by his devoted wife, two brothers, three children, one grandchild, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one cherished child. Beyond his remarkable professional achievements, he was an avid adventurer, finding joy in sailing, skiing, backpacking, scuba diving, and exploring the world. His passion for invention and his love for family will forever be remembered.
