Our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother Lauolive To’omalatai Tavai passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of May 16, 2021 in her home, surrounded by her children and many grandchildren. She was 83 years old. Mama was born on July 29, 1937 to High Chief Fa’aagi To’omalatai and his wife Pitovaomanaia Moefa’auouo To’omalatai of Matautu-tai, Samoa but raised by her adopted parents High Chief Su’a Aputi Su’a and Valu Su’a. She was a beautiful soul who loved God, her family, and her Samoan culture. Mama was extremely generous and would literally give the shirt off her back to anyone who needed it. She was smart and witty, and her knowledge of the bible, our Samoan culture, and family history was second to none.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband High Chief Papali’i Asiata Fauatea Poumau, her second husband High Chief Atiumaletavai Kaleopa Vaiki Tavai, grandson Christopher Tavai and many of her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by three sisters Lepe, Masele and Luisa, her children Fa’asulu Vili, Saifagaloa Pa’au (Rev. Lalomauga Pa’au), Leafaina Tavai Yahn, Joseph Tavai, Papali’i Fa’aagi Tavai (Caroline), Samuelu Tavai (Emily), Peniamina Tavai (Yvette), many grandchildren – Vili, Vaiki, Grace, Leafaina, Missionette, Shalome, Yasmin, Melina, Fa’aagi, Leafaina, Rocky, Jonathan, Joshua, Sam, Lauolivemara, Amara, Samuelu, Lauolive, Puataunofo, Pualemamae and great grandsons Derek, Zaiden and Kaleopa and great granddaughter Hope.
