Marilyn J. Hughes, 90, of Hughesville, Maryland passed away on August 16, 2019. Born January 16, 1929, in Aberdeen, Washington. She is survived by her Brother, Larry Dunlap of Elma, Washington. She is the Mother of Janet L. Cavanaugh and Michael E. Hughes. Grandchildren: Timothy (Scott) Cavanaugh, Amie Cavanaugh, Michael S. and Robert E. (Robbie) Hughes and deceased Grandson Jason Hughes; Great Grand Children: Chase, Camryn, Cullen, Zoe and Andrew.
After some community college she joined the Navy and met the late Robert E. Hughes in Corpus Christi, Texas and traveled with him, settling in Washington, D.C. where he served in the Navy for over 20 years. They raised their family in Oxon Hill and then she formally resided in Hughesville, MD.
She was very active in the Fleet Reserve Association as well as with other various organizations including: The VFW, NARFE, St. Johns Lunch Bunch and Widows Club, where she has acted as the regional President, Secretary and Treasurer in some organizations.
She retired from the Federal Government as a Secretary with the Department of Defense and worked at the Navy Memorial Archives. After retiring from the Archives she loved to play Bingo at the Waldorf Senior Center. She was also a member of the Red Hat Club, enjoyed making and spending time with friends. Marilyn adored taking care of her cats (survived by Woodsy), being with family and traveling.
She is loved by so many and lived a wonderful life.
Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, scheduled for a later date.
