

Anthony J. Hernandez Sr., 64, of Toppenish passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on June 22, 2014. Anthony was born in Yakima on November 26, 1949 to Lupe and Connie (Vasquez) Hernandez.
Anthony served as a Platoon Sergeant in the Army and received many accommodations, including the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defensive Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal for heroism, and the Purple Heart.
Anthony was a champion archer in college, a champion pool player, and owned race horses. His other favorite hobbies included dominoes, poker, playing the slot machines, and he was an avid stick game player. Anthony’s most cherished moments were spent with his children and grandchildren. He loved watching and being a part of their activities and sporting events.
He is survived by his wife, Vera (Tillequots) Hernandez; sons, Lionel Mathias, Daniel Hernandez, and Anthony Hernandez Jr.; daughters, Holly (Hernandez) Bevins and Malinda Waters; brothers, Robert “Bobby” Hernandez, Andy Hernandez Sr., and Marcus “Pete” Hernandez; sisters, Jenny Saiz, Delores “Lola” Olguin, Helen Hernandez-Lundin, Norma Hernandez, Charlene Cantu-Fairbanks, Juanita Shoup, and Mary Hernandez; sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Anthony was preceded in death by both his parents; brothers, Joe “Tudo” Hernandez, Alex “Sandy” Hernandez, and Lupe Hernandez Jr.; sister, Rosie Hernandez; son, Monolito Hernandez; daughter, Stephanie Waters; and his grandson, Nicholas Picard Jr.
A Rosary Service was held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the Toppenish Community Center. The Funeral Service will be held today at 9 a.m. also at the Toppenish Community Center. Burial will immediately follow at Reservation Community Memorial Park in Wapato. Merritt Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
